Merc’s sales-sheet info appears to have model-description mistakes… In fact, the Garmin now thinks I’m using double the fuel (after all, there’s 4-sensors on two engines now), but I’ll address that more a little later…Ī brief discussion of MercMonitor models is below, something I thought quite confusing during my initial product-selection (and something even the Merc sales-sheet didn’t seem knowledgeable of):

Knowing what it took to install two GFS-10 sensors along with the network backbone, versus what I know now after completely installing a Mercury SmartCraft ECO MercMonitor at the helm, I never should have attempted installing fuel-flow sensors. Unfortunately, hind-sight being 20/20 as it often is, there really wasn’t any difference between the flows calculated by the 5208 or by the SmartCraft. Realization came moments after the first system-operation using the two new GFS-10 sensors, that just having two additional monitoring-points at the 5208 wasn’t all that interesting or sexy, and maybe efforts should have pursued that SmartCraft gateway I’d had my eye on months earlier… Although it took a long time to run additional network trunk wires from the bilge to the helm, I did it as part of another installation (running power/COM between the bilge and helm for satellite-TV and radar), so actual time spent wasn’t more than a few hours. So, before the start of this season, I went through the effort to install a pair of Garmin GFS-10 fuel-flow sensors. Also, I was looking for a backup-check to verify the fuel-flow data I already had from the SmartCraft. I knew Mercury had a method to get the data from their SmartCraft over to NMEA2000, called a SmartCraft Gateway, but it was considerably more expensive than just buying a couple NMEA2000 fuel-flow sensors. With the price of gasoline becoming the actual impetus to get fuel-flow data into the Garmin, the decision was made before the beginning of the 2012-season to get that data into the 5208 at all cost. The real problem historically is that Mercury SmartCraft is a proprietary CAN network technology (and to be fair, Garmin’s Marine Network is also proprietary), but the 5208 also has NMEA2000 network interfaces.

Fuel tank capacity (not transmitted over SmartCraft bus)Ĭan be specified in the Gateway settings, as well as 12-point calibration for sensor readings. Up to four engines with eight fuel tanks and four batteries are supported.
